Modeled after the famous cathedral of St. Sophia in Kyiv, Ukraine, St. Nicholas Cathedral sits in the midst of Chicago's Ukrainian Village. It is modeled after the multi-domed eleventh century Cathedral of St. Sophia in Kyiv, Ukraine. A view of St. Sophia's Cathedral can be seen in the fresco above the main altar in St. Nicholas Cathedral. Kyiv is the capital of Ukraine and St. Sophia is one of the optimum examples of early Russo-Byzantine architecture. St. Nicholas is recognized for its magnificent frescos and mosaics. It is a worthy imitation of St. Sophia and is a Chicago landmark.
